The Narcissism Epidemic

The Narcissism Epidemic
Jean M. Twenge and W. Keith Campbell

I agree that there seem to be a lot more self-absorbed, arrogant assholes around these days, and that there is much in our cultural environment (indulgent parenting and education, the cult of celebrity, the Internet, and easy credit) that encourages them, but in this diagnostic report of the current narcissism “epidemic” there’s a bit too much anecdote, pop culture sampling, and drawing from anonymous comments on blogs for me to fully get on board. The authors also seem to have no ear for irony, and paint with too broad a brush. Finally, their prognosis and suggestions for treatment are overly optimistic. Hard times will likely only lead to a rage at betrayal by others, and not greater selflessness, responsibility, and strengthening of community.
