Alexis de Toqueville: Democracy’s Guide

Alexis de Tocqueville: Democracy’s Guide
Joseph Epstein

I’ve mentioned before (when reviewing Ross King’s little book on Machiavelli) that I think the “Eminent Lives” series is the best of the many new lines of short books on big subjects, and this sensible and sensitive introduction to the life and thought of Alexis de Tocqueville is another good example of what they do right. Epstein is an engaging writer, knowledgeable about and sympathetic toward his subject. I’d recommend this over a longer book covering the same ground.
