1066: The Year of the Conquest
David Howarth
“The most enjoyable part of history,” David Howarth writes in his introduction to 1066, is trying to understand the character of the actors involved. And indeed you can feel his enthusiasm catching as he analyses the decision-making and psychologies of Harold and William, the two main contestants in the battle for the English crown. An unabashedly Anglocentric take on the one year every schoolboy used to know, one can question some of the conclusions reached but at least Howarth gives his reasons for thinking the way he does, and he writes with economy and grace.
