The Way the World Works
Nicholson Baker

Nicholson Baker is one of those delightful prose stylists who can make reading an account of an escalator ride or the act of waking up in the morning enjoyable. In this collection of essays he offers pleasant and sometimes insightful observations on everyday errands (including a trip to the town dump), books he’s reading, things he enjoys about the Internet (Wikipedia), videogames he plays with his son, and – subjects of particular interest to him – the fate of libraries and the place of war in our culture (he is a bibliophile and a pacifist). You get the sense that there’s nothing in life Baker doesn’t find interesting, which is a rare and attractive quality in a writer, or anyone else for that matter.
