The Spanish Armada

The Spanish Armada
Robert Hutchinson

The great Armada was the underdog in this fight. The English had better ships, better armaments, and better captains. They also had luck on their side with the weather, in the form of a “Protestant wind.” As for the Spanish, they had the prayers of Philip II and were (in one admiral’s sarcastic words) “confident of a miracle.” Robert Hutchinson’s book does a great job digging into the story behind the story of this oft-told tale, and even manages to provide some new insight into the spy games and fiscal brinksmanship that played such a crucial role in the drama.
