Who Killed Hollywood?
Peter Bart
It’s sometimes interesting to read old collections of that most perishable of literary form, the newspaper column. These pieces by movie industry observer Peter Bart, first published in Variety and GQ during the 1990s, are a good example. While the Internet barely registers as a blip on Bart’s radar, warning flags are raised about the coming “tyranny of the techies.” The star system, Bart observes, is on its way out, and “the real emerging star arguably is computer graphics.” I don’t think that’s arguable any more. As for who killed Hollywood, the chief culprits are the corporate suits. These are, by now, the usual suspects, but no one can say that it’s been a bum rap.
