The Barbarous Years
Bernard Bailyn
In this account of the seventeenth-century “peopling of British North America” (by which the author means the colonial United States, as the book has nothing at all to say about early Canadian settlements), distinguished Harvard historian Bernard Bailyn emphasizes what a brutal, bloody, chaotic, squalid and mean affair it often was. A solid, authoritative overview of a complex subject, but perhaps a bit dry and academic for a general audience.
